5G vs. 4G: How 5G Will Improve the Formula

4G debuted in the late 2000s, and it was an immediate technological game-changer. At the time, some people found it difficult to imagine that anything could surpass this sort of monumental achievement. However, as time progresses, so do our expectations. It’s for this reason that we’re seeing a new frontier in the technological world as 5G creeps into view.

What Makes 5G Different?


In a word, everything. At the moment, 4G is a bit tied up in terms of how much bandwidth our modern devices require. 5G provides a clean slate, as its bandwidth isn’t as cluttered as that of the 4G network. This will allow us to move selected data at a much more efficient rate.

4G peaks at a speed of 1GB per second, averaging at 10MB in terms of everyday speed. 5G, however, peaks at an average speed of 20GB per second, or 100MB with everyday speeds—meaning it’s 20 times faster than its predecessor. It’s estimated that, if it performs as expected, 5G will be able to download a 3D movie in a mere six seconds.

5G is projected to drastically improve our Internet experience. We’ll see improved Internet reliability, and the cleaner bandwidth will allow us to connect more devices to our routers without affecting their efficiency.

Will I Pay More?


Phone plans themselves may not increase in price, but our wallets may still take a hit in other respects. For one, the cost of devices could jump by $200 to $300. Also, the increased speed and quality of our Internet connections could cause greater data consumption. Higher data usage means higher costs.

However, for technology enthusiasts, this is a welcome exchange. As the production of movies and other digital media continues to grow, we need the ability to support this growth. There may certainly be an adjustment period for Internet carriers and devices, but we can expect to see an improved online experience over the next couple years.

Sink or Float? The Google Glass Takes a Second Voyage

In 2013, Google released the Google Glass, a computer in the form of eyeglasses. Sporting a $1,500 price tag, it was a highly anticipated release—a taste of the future, before merely a concept used in sci-fi films. Unfortunately, while innovative, the product did not perform as expected. In 2015, Google withdrew the glasses and placed them back on the drawing board.

Now, four years after the first iteration of this product fizzled from our memories, Google revived the Glass in a new and improved form. They’ve named this version the Google Glass Enterprise Edition 2, and we hope to see a higher level of success.

What’s New with Edition 2?


The revitalized edition of the Glass sports a lower price tag than its predecessor, rounding out at $999. According to Google’s website, “As our customers have adopted Glass, we’ve received valuable feedback that directly informed the improvements in Glass Enterprise Edition 2.”

The product is not available for sale to general consumers, as it has been designed and marketed toward corporate buyers. The glass is equipped with a miniscule 8MP camera that boasts a 640x360-pixel display, as well as a small prism above the right eye, and three microphones. It also features a longer battery life in conjunction with a shorter charging time. A full list of specs is available on Google’s website.

Along with technological feats, the Glass also sports classic practicalities. Users utilizing the Glass for manufacturing types of work will find the glasses water and dust resistant.

Has Google Found the Right Formula?


The future of the Enterprise Edition 2 has a positive outlook, but we have to wonder how this newest version will fare. It certainly seems like it should earn itself a spot in the world of useful tech, but we thought the same for the first version—we know how that ended.

Google has taken their time improving the product and narrowed down its audience to those in business, so we may see a more positive reception this time around. It may be too early to determine victory this early in the game, but Google seems to have made welcome changes to the Glass. Will There Be Flying Cars in The Future? Signs Point to Yes

Flying cars have been staples in science fiction for decades, believed to be the ultimate stamp of the future. From The Jetsons to Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, there’s been no shortage of fascination with the concept. When it comes to the question of will there be flying cars in the future, many companies answer with a resounding yes.

The flying cars from fiction are quite a departure from what they’ll actually look like. Many imagine them as cars that can simply fly, but current iterations are more nuanced. From the AeroMobil 5.0 VTOL, which resembles a sports car crossed with a helicopter, to Dubai’s police hoverbike, which mimics a motorcycle, the landscape of flying cars is varied. There may not be a singular flying car “look,” but a few different types and styles may hit the scene.

Technically, we have the technology to craft these vehicles now. The United States already has a long history of aircraft innovation with airplanes, drones, and helicopters. There are, however, major concerns with flying cars, mostly related to space and safety.

Web Page Doesn’t Look Right in Facebook App? Check Setting to Turn Off Facebook’s In-App Browser, and Use Your Preferred Mobile Device Browser

In August 2018, Facebook modified their app to include an in-app browser that refers you to web pages in their own in-app browser. Many people don't even realize that they're not being sent to their favorite default web browser on their mobile device.

When you use Facebook's app and you view a website that someone shares with you, there is no referral clear and free out of the Facebook app.

With the in-app browser, there's a chance that the web page you are referred to might not look exactly like the web page that you would see in your own default browser on your mobile device, such as Chrome on Android or Safari on a iOS.

In some cases, a reported bug on Android, cuts off a bottom portion of the web page — leaving a black void. We know because we're the publisher and web developer for Arlingtoncardinal.com … and ever since Facebook rolled out the in-app browser feature, Android users viewing articles on Arlingtoncardinal.com have been complaining about seeing a bottom portion of web pages blocked with a black void. The bug apparently did not affect Apple iOS users.

Another disadvantage is that your default (free and separate) browser has features, such as bookmarking, saving to the home screen, and possibly the added security settings or whatever other settings you might prefer with your browser of choice. Many users aren't too happy about being forced to use an in-app browser in any app — Facebook or otherwise.

Apple Expected to Continue Using Lighting Instead of USB-C in Apple iPhones

The next generation of Apple iPhones is expected to continue using the Lightning port and a USB-A charger data and charging, instead of changing to the USB-C. Apple was involved in development the USB-C port. Almost every other current generation Apple device, including the latest iPad Pro to the Macbook and Macbook Pro feature the USB-C. However, according to tech site Macotakara, the bottom line is the cost of keeping the Lightning port on new iPhones for the next few years is said to be more profitable for Apple.   Previously, Apple was believed to be opting for the switch to USB-C


USB-C is a 24-pin USB connector system, which features a two-fold rotationally-symmetrical connector. USB-C cables and connectors connect hosts to devices, replacing a variety of ports and electrical connectors including USB-A, USB-B, HDMI, and 3.5 mm audio cables and connectors.


In August 2014 the USB Type-C Specification 1.0 was published by the USB Implementers Forum (USB-IF) and was finalized. USB-C was developed about the same time as the USB 3.1 specification. 


In July 2016, USB-C was adopted by the IEC as "IEC 62680-1-3".


In September 2017, USB 3.2 was released, replacing the USB 3.1 standard. Speed is the major feature upgrade utilizing existing USB 3.1 SuperSpeed and SuperSpeed+ data modes and introduces two new SuperSpeed+ transfer modes speeding beyond the USB-C connector using two-lane operation, with data rates of 10 and 20 Gbit/s (1250 and 2500 MB/s). USB-C defines the connector; the ability to deliver speed depends on the device.


Lightning is currently slightly slower than USB C 3.1.


Apple's iPhone 8, iPhone 8 Plus and iPhone X support rapid charging where batteries can go from flat to 50% in 30 minutes, but users need to purchase a USB-C charger and a USB-C to Lightning cable adapter.

Louis Rossmann Repairs a Dead Mac After Best Buy and the Apple Store Declined Repair

Awesome Louis Rossmann tells a story of a dead MacBook Air taken to Best Buy and the Apple Store, where personnel said the Mac can't be fixed. Next Rossman fixes a corroded pad that houses an SMC chip and the Mac is fixed. 


Rossman first rules out keyboard and trackpad trouble by disconnecting. Rossmann finds very little current draw and fan still doesn't work with the keyboard and trackpad disconnected.

1. Add solder around pads in the area

3. Then use wick to make sure that any solder that was added, wasn't added on top of corrosion.


Rossman added flux and new solder on top of the pad, while installing a new chip. The MacBook Air started once again.


The System Management Controller (SMC) is a subsystem of Intel processor-based Macintosh computers -- similar in function to the older SMU or PMU of non-Intel Macintosh computers (PowerPC).

The SMC has roles in controlling thermal and power management, battery charging, video mode switching, sleep and wake, hibernation, and LED indicators. The SMC also enables enforcement of the macOS End User License, allowing it to identify when it is running on non-Apple hardware.
